A BNSF cargo train halted in downtown Cashmere after reportedly striking and killing a pedestrian.

CASHMERE — A BNSF cargo train is halted in downtown Cashmere after reportedly striking and killing a pedestrian just before noon today.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area and divert via the Goodwin Road Bridge on the west or Hughes Road on the east. All crossings within the town are blocked by the train as of 12 p.m.

Chelan County sheriff's deputies asked the city of Cashmere to close traffic at Mission and Division Street, Woodring and Cottage Avenue, and Mission and Maple streets.

The train was eastbound through the town at the time of the accident. The engine stopped at the Maple Street crossing. Deputies taped off an area where the collision took place, surrounding the former BNSF depot building between North Division and Maple Street.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
