Proof that sweaters aren’t only for winter

We’re not yet to the midway point between the summer solstice and the fall equinox, but we think you should start shopping for knits ASAP. Not the heavy, cozy sweaters you bring out for the most bone-chilling days—but lightweight, open-knit pieces more than suitable for summer. Breathable weaves add dimension to your outfits, but finding the tops, dresses, skirts, and more that won’t leave you with heatstroke in the warm weather can be a bit daunting if you don’t know where to look.

“I love the idea of open knits for summer. It is a modern, fresh way to look and feel cool,” says Beth Buccini, owner and founder of Kirna Zabête. Natural fibers like linen and cotton are ideal for breathability during these hot months, and combining them with a loose, see-through weave makes for a perfect outfit base, no matter where you’re headed. In more modest settings, pair these pieces with nude underpinnings, Buccini suggests. Or if your plans are taking you by the water, a crocheted cover-up is a chic choice with your swimsuit underneath for an easy beach-to-city transition.

Open knits don’t require much more layering than your normal dresses or tops, and “often they are delivered with a matching slip, like this Proenza Schouler one,” says Buccini. Depending on the piece, these styles can easily transition from day to night, as well. Buccini opts for “a simple nude camisole underneath” an open-knit top for day trips into the city, switching into “a sexy silk bra in a matching color” for the evening.

Whether you’re headed to the office or the beach or a fun brunch with your friends, keep scrolling to find 12 of the best open knits for warm weather that won’t overheat you.

This colorful maxi will be a favorite for anyone who gravitates towards playful pieces. Dress it down with some white sneakers or up with metallic heeled sandals.

“I love the idea of a crochet maxi dress. It is an expected way to dress that feels original and new,” Buccini says.

This embellished gown exudes elegance. If you have any black-tie summer events coming up (other than someone else’s wedding), this curve-hugging maxi dress will make you the best dressed there.

If your ideal beach day consists of laying out on the sand and then hitting the town once the sun sets, you’ll love this baby-blue two-piece set (with the skirt below). Throw on this top over your bikini, no matter the strap situation.

For something a bit more modest—say, for your chilly workplace—try this blue cardigan from Adam Lippes. It’s partially made from recycled materials and has cute button details along the side.

For those shocking transitions from the sweltering heat into air-conditioned buildings, By Malene Birger’s cream sweater is one to keep in your bag. The organic cotton blend keeps this knit lightweight and easy to carry, but the tighter weave makes it a cozy essential you’ll be happy you brought with you.

Proenza Schouler’s brown maxi is the type of dress you can wear in both summer and fall without really having to consider the weather. Whatever the season, finish off the look with a pair of loafers.

Give your look a little extra oomph with a beaded and bright layering piece. Wear this green tank as a swim cover-up or over a fun bralette for some dimension.

Get the best of both worlds with this crocheted skirt: mid-waisted in the front, low-waisted in the back. The tied-up details in the back help keep this piece more casual.

Though the silhouette looks rather modest when it’s buttoned up, this Paco Rabanne cardigan is made to serve some light scandal. The semi-sheer lace fabrication is supposed to show off your bras and bralettes—so make sure you pair it with something equally chic.

This is for all the chunky-sweater lovers out there who prefer winter dressing over summer. Wear this oversize cardigan and matching bralette with Bermuda jean shorts and chunky sneakers.

Leather is not just a winter material—Aisling Camps proves it with this handmade tank made from leather cord. Only wear this made-to-order top if you’re in the mood to talk to people, though, because it’s a unique piece that everyone will be asking about.

It’s all about the details with these scalloped shorts. The cotton fabrication makes these bottoms a go-to for warm days with a refreshing breeze.
